There’s something very appropriate and satisfying about Beverly Cleary reaching the milestone of 100 years. Her books have always had a timeless quality…sure, you might occasionally see a word that hints the events depicted took place a while ago; however, the sense of immediacy, the here and now that has always been an essential part of childhood has always been present in her books. “A present! thought Ramona, and knew at once she was going to like Miss Binney.”
As Ms. Cleary herself once said, “What year do your books take place? And the only answer I can give is, in childhood.”
So, Happy Birthday, Ms. Cleary and thank you for giving us such memorable characters: Henry Huggins, Ribsy, Ralph the mouse (from the Mouse and the Motorcycle) Beezus and, of course, Ramona, who is not a pest! I know Ramona is still happily thinking up new adventures on Klickitat Street every time a reader opens up one of Ms. Cleary’s books for the first time.
